CBD for Dogs

CBD is for Dogs Too!

One of the most common questions we receive is "Can I give CBD to my dog?" The answer is yes: your pooch has an endocannabinoid system just like you and can experience the same therapeutic benefits. In fact, cannabis use for animals is nothing new - the ancient Greeks used cannabis to treat their horses for colic, inflammation and wound healing.

We are dog lovers here at Lily Hill and several of our team members give CBD to their furry friends (Ralph, pictured above, is a fan of our CBD oil). A few years ago, I started giving CBD oil to my greyhound, Watson, for his arthritis. He was getting older and developed a slight limp. A few drops of CBD oil later and Watson was off and running (literally!). As an added benefit, it also helped his anxiety - he was noticeably calmer after a few weeks of taking CBD.

Start Low and Go Slow

Typical dosage for dogs is .5 to 5mg of CBD per 10 pounds of your dog's body weight, twice per day. I generally recommend our 500mg CBD Oil for dogs because it is easy to dose at 1mg of CBD per drop of oil. For a bigger dog, or one who needs a larger dose, you could also use our 1000mg CBD oil which contains 2mg of CBD per drop.

Start with a low dose and increase the dose every 4 to 7 days until the desired results are achieved. The amount needed will be different for every dog and some conditions will require more CBD than others. Since dogs can't tell us how they feel, you'll need to be a keen observer of his behavior so you can gauge the effects of the CBD.

You can add the oil to your dog's food at mealtime, mix it into some peanut butter as a treat, or just administer it straight into his mouth. Because our CBD oil is made with just olive oil and CBD extract, you don't need to worry that you're giving him any unwanted fillers or additives (plus, olive oil is great for his coat!).

You can also apply CBD oil topically to rashes and hot spots. However, please don't apply our CBD salve to your dog as it contains other ingredients that you may not want Fido to ingest if he licks it.

Talk to Your Vet

Always talk to your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pup to make sure it's right for him and that the CBD won't interact with any medications he may be taking.

We'd love to hear how CBD has helped your pooch. Let us know in the comments below or post his picture on Instagram and tag us @lilyhillcbd!

This is so timely! Last night, my 13 year old Wheaten Terrier took a tumble down our condo steps (we’re on the 2nd floor). Limped around outside, carried back up. Gave him your CBD oil since it works well for me when my back hurts. He was very mellow last night and is walking better today. I’m going to keep adding drops to his food. He’s had stiffness for a few months now, so knowing it helped Watson, means it’ll help my old guy. :)
